On Joy and Sorrow

On Joy and Sorrow
 Kahlil Gibran

Your joy is your sorrow unmasked.
And the selfsame well from which your laughter rises was oftentimes filled with your tears.
And how else can it be?
The deeper that sorrow carves into your being, the more joy you can contain.
Is not the cup that holds your wine the very cup that was burned in the potter’s oven?
And is not the lute that soothes your spirit, the very wood that was hollowed with knives?
When you are joyous, look deep into your heart and you shall find it is only that which has given you sorrow that is giving you joy.
When you are sorrowful look again in your heart, and you shall see that in truth you are weeping for that which has been your delight.

Some of you say, “Joy is greater thar sorrow,” and others say, “Nay, sorrow is the greater.”
But I say unto you, they are inseparable.
Together they come, and when one sits, alone with you at your board, remember that the other is asleep upon your bed.

Verily you are suspended like scales between your sorrow and your joy.
Only when you are empty are you at standstill and balanced.
When the treasure-keeper lifts you to weigh his gold and his silver, needs must your joy or your sorrow rise or fall.

  1. Ah how beautiful. I think I read this many, many years ago. Nice to be reminded. I have known much sorrow and find it is like a ladder that helps you climb closer to the light. Sorrow can be quite beautiful as I have written on my blog.

Thanks, Enreal, for posting this. It struck a cord just when I am feeling a tiny bit sad 🙂

(((Zen)))… The Prophet is my favorite piece of literature… I agree with your view on Sorrow… it is beautiful that one can feel that deep…

  2. Beautifully written! Like most of Kahlil Gibran 🙂
    But I disagree 🙂
I don`t think it`s the way, it has to be! I can be joyful because of joy.And however, I do know what sorrow is, feeling pure joy is something much more than comparing it with non-joy(or sorrow).
Of course, it comes from same source – self. But that what the self is – everything! There is no duality, no opposition, but fulfilled variety of every single bit of emotion what belongs to being a human 🙂

PS I like your blog – it`s beautiful by it`s meaning and expression 🙂
    Soulfood….
We are all on the same quest – to ourselves and it`s nice to meet other people heading to same direction consciously. Thank You!

(((Eva)))… Thank you for your kind words… As for your views… it is not the way we see, it is that we can see… you see? Thank You…

  3. Thanks for posting this, Enreal. It is beautiful indeed. Joy and Sorrow intertwined. The words “Only when you are are you at standstill and balanced” are true, one way or the other. Pure emptiness – a lifeless soul.

I agree with Zenuria. My eyes have been opened over time and I now see sorrow not as a sign that I’m a deserted soul, but merely a sign that Life acknowledges me and is giving me opportunities to nurture my spiritual strength. Another sign that God hasn’t written me off his records.

    Thank you again.

(((Glaize))).. Exactly!!! And my dear friend… your soul is ever so pure and kind… God would never write you off…
